safety
-
gum shields
Like any contact sport e.g. Rugby, we recommend that you wear a gum shield when rolling. This will protect your teeth and your brain.
-
hydration
You can sweat allot when rolling (even in Winter), so make sure you are hydrated and bring a water bottle.
-
tapping
When caught in a submission hold, tap your partner clearly with your hand or by verbally saying “tap”. Tapping promptly is not weakness, but an opportunity to learn and avoid injury.
-
knee pads
Some people like to wear knee pads for additional protection. These are not essential, but well worth considering.
-
illness
Due to the relative intimacy of BJJ, please ensure you do not attend classes if unwell - no matter how mild the symptoms.
-
cleaning
All the mats are cleaned and disinfected daily and the Academy is deep cleaned weekly. Alcohol hand gel is available in both the bathroom and on entry.
-
banned moves
Aside from the usual IBJJF rules for Gi and NAGA rules for No Gi, we do not permit jumping guard, scissor takedowns or flying submissions during sparring due to the high risk of injury.
-
etiquette
All those those attending the Academy (including coaches) are expected to use their common sense and act in accordance with the UKBJJA code of conduct here.
-
head gear
Occasionally people use ‘ear defenders’ commonly seen in wrestling and rugby. These are forbidden in competitions, but okay when training providing they are completely soft.
-
Safeguarding
All instructors are DBS checked, trained in Safeguarding, First Aid and covered by the clubs UKBJJA £5m tournament, public and product liability instructor insurance. In addition, we provide free member-to-member liability insurance for all our athletes.
